OSX Address Book data disappears

We’ve received the occasional support email that data from OSX Address Book suddenly being wiped out. Naturally this is of concern to both the users affected and to Xchange Network. So we did some research….

It turns out that XC Connect is not source of the data disappearances. As you know, XC Connect cannot/will not delete items or groups/folders on its own. Its role is simply to “move” data, not modify or delete it.

We have learned that Address Book can and will “reset” itself or a portion of itself causing the data within Address Book (the data store actually) to be deleted. It would appear that there may be a separate process that is unstable or possibly not thread-safe and its interaction with Address Book causes Address Book to crash. The bottom line is that it is not XC that is causing the data to be deleted.

A very quick google search turns up postings such as the one’s below:

We wish that we could solve the issue ! We know that it is important and that the data that is usually lost is important! But it is an OSX issue and we do not have an answer regarding why that occurs.

However, the good news is that IF the “delete” requests were send to the XCN Server, it is possible to recover your data by going to the XCN Server Admin screen -> ‘folders’ -> ‘Data Recovery’.
